The IBRC is held every three years in a different part of the world. This multi-day event brings together hundreds of people working in research, conservation and management, to exchange knowledge and experiences about bats. 
The 1st IBRC was held in then Czechoslovakia in 1968. In 2025 we will have reached the 20th IBRC, which will be held in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. This is the second time IBRC will be held in Australia, with the 8th IBRC held in Sydney in 1989. ​
